3. Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge

Established in the late 1930s and spanning an area of over 45,000 acres, Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is dedicated to the preservation of the Carolina Sandhills inland sand dunes and the many species of birds and mammals that live in the area. Located just 25 miles southwest of downtown Cheraw, this wildlife refuge can be reached in about half an hour by car via route SC-145.
