3 Favorite Local Parks Near Cheraw, SC

Cheraw State Park 

This park is a popular place for golfing, camping, hiking, fishing, swimming, and boating on Lake Juniper, all without leaving town. Cheraw State Park covers more than 7,000 acres of pine forest and cypress wetlands. We always try to spot the red-cockaded woodpecker, an endangered bird species that makes its home here in Cheraw. Anglers can try to catch pickerel, catfish, bream, crappie, and bass, with kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats available for rent.

There’s no charge to enter Cheraw State Park, located at 100 State Park Rd. It’s open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily through the end of September, then until 8 p.m. in October and 6 p.m. from November through February. Both cabins and tent sites are available for campers.

Dizzy Gillespie Homesite Park

At this unique Cheraw park, you can view a public art installation celebrating jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, who was born at a house there in 1917. The Gillespie family lived in Cheraw until 1935. Dizzy Gillespie Homesite Park features a state historic marker with information about the life of this musical great.

The stainless-steel fence and benches were designed to represent some of his most famous works. The trumpet sculpture that serves as the centerpiece of the park was designed by students from Cheraw and supervised by Bob Doster, an artist who lives in the state. Dizzy Gillespie Homesite Park is located at 344 Huger St.

H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area

Another gem in Cheraw, this recreation area hosts field competitions on 7,000 acres of fields and forests. H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area is also a popular place for equestrians with more than 20 miles of horseback riding trails. The park also has primitive and electric hook-up campsites, a meeting hall, and a waterfowl pond.

The H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Admission is $3 for adults, $1.50 for seniors who live in South Carolina, $1 for kids ages 6 to 15, and free for children 5 and younger. The park is located at 279 Sporting Dog Trl. Check the website before you visit, since it might be closed for a special event.
