A timely transmission repair job can often save you a great deal of money. If you ever allow a minor issue with your gearbox or clutch to grow, your entire transmission might break down. And with today’s automatic shifts, new transmissions cost almost as much as replacing an engine. Here are three main kinds of transmission trouble that require a quick trip to your nearest Chevy dealer for repairs before the problem worsens.

Issues with Your Fluid

When transmission problems occur, the most common cause is related to the transmission fluid. This fluid lubricates all the moving parts and helps to keep the temperature down while cleaning out metal shavings from the gears and combating corrosion. Fluid trouble can result from a faulty solenoid: the valve that controls the flow of fluid. It’s also possible for a transmission to spring a leak, which will need to be found and fixed immediately.

Transmission fluid is dark red in color, becoming brown as it ages, and you’re likely to notice it pooling under your car in the event of a leak. A leak might spring from various places, including the pan gasket, a torque pump, or an axle seal. Even without leaks, transmission fluid eventually grows old and dirty and begins to lose its lubricating function.

Have a Chevy Dealer Refresh Your Fluid Often?

With so much heat and friction inside the transmission, it’s no wonder that transmission fluid gradually wears down and thickens. For this reason, it’s important to flush your transmission fluid out and replace it periodically. If you drive an automatic shift, every 60,000 miles is the customary recommended interval. Manual shifts need a fluid change every 30,000 miles or so.

Problems with Your Gearbox

Issues inside the gearbox can be rather more troublesome. If your gears have rounded out, your torque converter is malfunctioning, or your transmission bands have worn down, then you’ll start to experience slipping gears. You’ll hear grinding sounds as your gears struggle. In an automatic car, you might also hear whining and other strange noises.

As it adapts to these issues, the engine will rev unusually high while you struggle to shift gears. You’ll probably have a delay in your acceleration or a dramatic loss of accelerative power. Your gears might become stiff, or refuse to change, especially into reverse. At worst, your gears will suddenly shift or jump into neutral all on their own.

Trouble with Your Clutch

Your clutch is one more source of potential problems. Inadequate fluid, a loss of traction between the flywheel and disk, or problems with the clutch cable can cause the clutch to stop engaging or disengaging properly. This can happen in both manual and automatic vehicles.
